other art form, the Buddha Images epitomises the Thaiart traditional
essentially religious in its inspiration; and more than any other
art form, the Buddha
image, which dominates antique showrooms in Thailand, is the most
coverted by
collectors. The Buddha image is the sacred symbol of Buddhist doctrine.
Both
those who commission and those who create these religious works
of art seek
to gain merit. |
Thai Buddha images
may be classified into eight main periods, each with certain
identifiable characteristics. These periods reflect the great diversity
within Thai-
Art which distinguishes Thailand from the other countries of Southeast
Asia,
and makes a study of the images all the more challenging.

The major Styles |
Each period in Thai
art history developed its own interpretation of the Buddha's
features. Certain visual clues can help in the identification of
period and styles.
